Author Guidelines

Types of documents accepted

Patrimônio e Memória publishes free articles, articles in dossiers and reviews every year. The dossiers are organised by researchers specialising in specific themes, selected by the Editorial Board following the publication of periodic notices, and comprise articles of excellence, a reference in the field.

Patrimônio e Memória publishes texts in Portuguese, English and Spanish; those written in a foreign language must include a title, abstract and keywords in Portuguese and English, respecting the same requirements as articles in Portuguese.

The journal accepts manuscripts previously deposited in a non-commercial preprint server, such as SciELO Preprints or Zenodo, as long as they are not simultaneously submitted for peer review in another journal. The responsible author must inform the journal whether the manuscript has been deposited on a preprint server and must provide the corresponding DOI by filling in the Open Science Compliance Form.

Author contributions

Patrimônio e Memória recommends that authorship be based on the following criteria:

1) conceives, formulates, or improves a research problem;

2) oversees the planning and execution of the research;

3) directs the research, theoretical underpinning, and/or methodological application;

4) is involved in the elaboration of analyses and their interpretation;

5) participates in the preparation, creation and implementation of the research.

6) participates in the critical revision of the intellectual content for the version to be published.

Whenever an article has more than one author, the contribution of each must be specified using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) standard.

In addition, authors may not have more than one article under evaluation in the journal, and must respect the minimum interval of 2 years between the publication of one article and the submission of another for evaluation.

Manuscript preparation and format

To submit a manuscript, you need to register on the Open Journal System (OJS) platform and log in to the system. Manuscripts must be submitted to the journal exclusively via online submission. When submitting the manuscript, the author(s) must provide their ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) identifier.

The journal requires a minimum master's degree to submit articles and reviews. Only PhDs can submit a dossier.

Articles should be 10,000 words maximum, including notes and references. They must include a title, abstract, five keywords in Portuguese and English and in the language in which they were written, if in Spanish. The contribution must be original and unpublished, not currently being evaluated by another publication and without indication of authorship.

Reviews must be between 1,500 and 3,000 words long and present works published in Portuguese in the last two years, or in a foreign language in the last three years, within the thematic scope of the journal and in the area of Humanities. They must have their own title in Portuguese and English and present publishing data, the author's background and their relationship with the work being reviewed, objectives and methodology, main arguments and conclusions. They must critically analyse the work, its impact on the area of knowledge and its place in the debates on the subject. Reviews that only summarise the work will not be accepted. Reviews must be accompanied by a summary/abstract and five keywords in Portuguese and English. The bibliography used must be referenced at the end of the text. Authors of reviews should be aware of situations that could be characterised as a "conflict of interest".

Authors should consider the following guidelines for preparing and formatting manuscripts:

  1. All submissions should be sent in Times New Roman, body 12, 1.5 spacing and with 3 cm margins. All texts should be submitted after spelling and grammar checks.
  2. Short textual quotations (up to three lines) should be inserted in the text, in inverted commas and without italics (if double inverted commas are used in the original bibliography, use single inverted commas). Long textual quotations (more than three lines) should be in a separate paragraph, indented 4.0 cm from the left margin, justified, in a smaller font than that used in the text, single-spaced and without inverted commas. For direct and indirect quotations, we use the author-date system (NBR 10520/2023).
  3. Deletions, interpolations, additions, comments, emphases or highlights should be indicated as follows. The full stop should be used to end the sentence and not the quotation. a) deletions: [...]; b) interpolations, additions or comments: [ ]; c) emphases or highlights: underlined, bold or italicised.
  4. References should include ONLY the texts cited in the manuscript, following the standard specified by ABNT (NBR 6023/2018).
  5. Footnotes should be strictly explanatory, with a maximum length of 260 characters each with a space. When translating a quotation, the original text should not be inserted as a note.
  6. Authors should provide sources of support for the work, including names of sponsors, contract number (if any), together with explanations of the role of these sources.

Manuscripts that do not fulfil the criteria for submission to the Journal will be immediately returned for adaptation.

All tables and charts must be numbered and labelled, with the source and access indicated in the caption. All figures must have a caption, be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and begin with the word "Figure".
