Between continuities and ruptures
gender and indigenous labor in the Jesuit missions of Río de la Plata (1609-1639)

This research note aims to discuss the impact of the Río de la Plata missions on the gender division of labor among the Guarani, between the years 1609 and 1639. As a development of a Scientific Initiation research about indigenous labor and output in the Jesuit reductions of Guairá, its main sources were Annual Letters transcribed by Leonhardt and Ernesto Maeder, documents transcribed by Jaime Cortesão (regarding Guairá, Tape and Itatim) and Carlos Jensen (regarding Guairá), as well as Conquista Espiritual, by Montoya. It was possible to infer, for both women and men, that there were significant changes in the expectations over the intensity of labor. At the same time, while for women the types of work remained similar to earlier practices, for men there were more significant changes, with the addition of new tasks, possibly contributing to more severe conflicts within this group.
